People outside the San Diego County area often think of our little corner of Paradise solely in terms of its proximity to the ocean. The Pacific certainly has had much to do with the development of both the San Diego area and this perception, and no one would deny the connection the entire Southern California region has to the water is undeniably strong. It’s true that yachting, deep sea fishing, scuba diving, and surfing all thrive here, but the range of outdoor activities in the area is much broader.
San Diego County’s mild, Mediterranean climate is ideal for all manner of outdoor pursuits, and the activity options offer something for all ages and interests, from the adrenaline-seeking thrills of off-roading or BASE jumping, to the more passive joys of whale watching, birding, or shell collecting. The label “America’s Finest City” is certainly well-deserved when it comes to recreation and the great outdoors.
Any conversation about San Diego County and the role nature plays in the outdoor lifestyle that it tends to foster must begin with the water and the many recreational and sporting opportunities it provides. The variety of boating choices available runs the entire gamut, from a leisurely ferry ride past huge aircraft carriers in the shelter of San Diego Bay, to the cruise ships that travel beyond the horizon into the vast expanses of the open sea. From a 35’ Cruiser out on the Pacific to a 16’ catamaran sailboat exploring local waters, from windsurfing to tubing and everything in between, if there’s water involved you can do it here.
If you prefer being in the water to being on it, don’t miss the thrill of diving with the sea lions off the Coronados Islands. If you want to keep your head above water, you’re sure to enjoy yourself if you give sea kayaking a try. Or explore the tide pools of secluded coves and the crashing surf of the towering cliffs along the La Jolla shoreline on solid ground instead, taking one of the most memorable walks on the beach imaginable. If relaxation is more your idea of recreation, stake out a patch of sand and enjoy the simple pleasure of a quiet, sun filled day at one of San Diego’s many pristine beaches.
Fresh water plays a role in San Diegans’ leisure lives also. The El Capitan Reservoir on the San Diego River is popular for its waterskiing, wakeboarding, and personal watercraft use. For a more sedate atmosphere, try your hand at fly fishing on Lake Cuyamaca, which also is an ideal location for canoeing or kayaking. There are many lakes to swim and fish throughout all the communities of San Diego as well.
Head east away from the coastline and you’ll soon encounter the arid, rugged landscapes and scenic backdrops of East County, where you must then decide between heading down to the desert or up into the mountains. If the other-worldly environments of exposed canyons and mesas appeal to you, head towards the walkways that wind through the dunes and vegetation of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Or if you prefer tree-lined hiking paths and horse riding trails, you might choose the high ground and the camping and picnicking of Cuyamaca Rancho State Park instead.
The hot air ballooning in the region provides some of Southern California’s best flight locations. Float high above our beautiful hills and valleys, and take in the incredible vistas of the local wine vineyards, or wait until evening and experience the matchless views of a picturesque Pacific sunset. If you are interested in taking a more active role, you could choose to capitalize on the windy cliffs of Torrey Pines and enjoy some of the best hang gliding available anywhere. For the truly adventurous, you may even opt to brave the winds without any wings, testing your nerve and resolve with a sky diving excursion. Numerous airstrips in the area cater to the private plane owner’s every need.
